Alphametics - Involving Addition

Alphametics Involving Addition:  Alphametics is a mathematical puzzle where every letter stands for a digit from 0-9. The mapping of letters to number is one to one, i.e., the same letter always stands for the same digit and the same digit is always represented by the same letter.

Here are a few cases which will help you solve complex problems easily.

Case I: -

Inference : In case of addition of two single digits, the value of carry = 1

Therefore, c = 1

Case II : -

Inference : - The only possible value of "b" is O and the possible value of "a" is less than 5 because in this case there is no carry.

Case III : -

Inference : - The value of a = 1 and since addition of "a" and "b" should give a carry.

So, b = 9

Illustration:  In the following expression, each letter always stands for the same digit.

If A = 2, which digit does 'D' stand for ?

A. 8               B.  7             C. 6            D.  4

Answer: A

Solution: S = 1, as it is the carry.

Also, A = 2 (given)

Now, putting the value we get,

Now,

E = 2 + 1 = 3

O = E + 1 = 3 + 1 = 4

T = E + 2 = 3 + 1 = 5

D + E = 11

D + 3 = 11

Then D = 11 - 3 = 8

Hence the correct option is A
